FAQs
What Is Laser Hair Removal and How Does It Work?
Laser hair removal is a non-surgical, non-invasive method of removing unwanted hair. A laser beam travels through the skin and is attracted to the pigment in the hair. The energy then flows to the cells in the hair follicle that are responsible for hair growth. The heat destroys these cells and inhibits further hair growth.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?
Most people will respond to laser hair removal unless there is pigment absent from the hair, such as light blond or white hair. This is because laser hair removal works when the laser beam targets pigment. Generally, if your skin is light and your hair is dark and coarse, you are the ideal candidate. However, due to the specific light qualities of the Diode Laser, we can treat all skin types - especially dark skins and we are able to treat all hairs from fine to strong. Your therapists have over 25 years of experience in light-based hair removal and are well-versed on how to optimize the treatment settings.
How Effective Is Laser Hair Removal?
In 1997 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved hair removal lasers for permanent hair reduction. This means that hair removal lasers will be effective as long as the right laser and settings are applied and the appropriate number of treatments are administered. However, there is no guarantee that every hair will respond. Some hairs can be resistant to treatment and may return as thin hairs and/or may be lighter in colour.
How Long Does The Treatment Take?
The treatment is very fast compared to traditional IPL. This will all depend on the size of the area. For example, the treatment of an upper lip can be under a minute, whereas full legs may take 20-30 mins. Most treatments are easily done in your lunchtime.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Hair grows in 3 cycles and most patients need at least 3 or more treatments spaced at least 4 to 8 weeks apart for a satisfactory result. Hormonal areas such as face and backs of the upper thigh may need more treatments than an underarm for instance but you will have hairs that die at every treatment, meaning you have less and less hair each visit.
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Most patients experience mild warming of the skin as the laser handpiece moves over the hair. Our Diode laser has a chilled compression tip that makes the treatments more comfortable. The chilled tip also protects the surface of the skin during the laser treatment.
Are there any side effects with Laser treatment?
Side effects are usually mild. The skin may appear red, but this subsides within 5 - 15 minutes. All of our therapists have international and national Laser Safety qualifications. In fact, you are our priority. No treatment will be performed if you are at any risk. This is why every client has a full consultation prior to treatment. There are contraindications to laser treatment and these are discussed at the consultation.
How Will I Prepare For A Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
If you decide to proceed with treatment, we give you a FREE CONSULTATION that explains how the lasers work and if you are suitable for treatment. We give you a written quote of the cost and how many treatments you are likely to need, and an aftercare sheet to take home. The area to be treated will have to be shaved first to ensure all of the laser energy is delivered to the hair follicle and not absorbed on the surface of the skin. Again, at your consultation, we will tell you everything you need to know.
